Vacation with Blood in the Water

The weather is heating up and that means it’s time to pack your bags and enjoy a vacation. No matter your destination, the goal is to have fun and relax as much as possible. The last thing on your mind when planning what to pack is probably a trauma kit but it shouldn’t be. A serious injury can be unexpected and happen where professional help may not be easily accessible so it’s important to be prepared.

Consider this, if you’re attending one of the top beach destinations this year then you might be a witness or victim of a shark attack. According to the Florida Museum of Natural History and the University of Florida, from 2007 to 2016 there was a total of 449 unprovoked shark attacks in the United States with many more worldwide. Already this year Florida had 8 reported attacks within 2 weeks at the beginning of April. A bite to an arm or leg can result in massive hemorrhaging. A victim can potentially lose their life within a matter of minutes from uncontrolled bleeding. Tourniquets can be used to reduce or stop blood loss to help save the victim’s life until professional responders can arrive.

Tourniquet Use in the News

Recent stories have highlighted how tourniquets were used to save a life after an attack. A news article out of Oregon talks about Joseph Tanner, a trauma nurse, instructed bystanders on how to tie a tourniquet to control his bleeding until help arrived. Another story explains how bystanders helped Leeanne Ericson after her attack and a rubber surfboard leash was used as a tourniquet. Both Joseph and Leeanne might not be able to share their story today if it weren’t for the life-saving use of a tourniquet. The stories and many others highlight the importance of having a tourniquet and trauma kit at the beach.

The value of tourniquets has risen over the past decade by their proven ability to save lives when serious bleeding occurs. As a result, many EMS personnel and first responders are now carrying tourniquets. We have the SOFTT-W tourniquet in each of our four kits so you can treat massive hemorrhaging when necessary. A perfect fit for a car or suitcase is our Tramedic® Individual Response Pack. The compact and powerful trauma kit can keep you prepared while traveling. A few minutes can make a difference and our goal is to empower you with the right tools to save a life.

Ask yourself this, would you be prepared if you or someone nearby were involved in a serious bleeding incident? We strive to educate the public on how to understand the injury and proper treatment techniques so you’re ready at a moment’s notice. It’s vital to be properly trained and educated in order to offer help when needed. For that reason, we offer an online training portal and bilingual instructions so any age and capability level can be a first responder. So be prepared and enjoy your summer fun with peace of mind.
